File Sharing and Data Sovereignty

Everyday millions of companies and individuals rely on file sharing applications such as Dropbox and Onedrive to share files. While these services have become indispensable in the current climate where a large number of employees are now working remotely, they come with their own problems.

Encryption:

While these services all tout that your data is encrypted in trans ( via SSL) and encrypted at rest. These keys are controlled by the vendors and thus are subject to FISA warrants. These warrants often come with a gag order which basically forbids the vendor from even in forming you that they have received such a court order. Other times they may receive a “normal” subpoena for your documents, theoretically they will inform you of the court order, however they are still compelled to hand over that data.

Cost:

These services usually have a cost structure that revolves around a given amount of storage for a certain price tier. Sometimes this is a shared pool and other times the storage is allotted on a per user basis. For example as part of the Office 365 subscription each user is allowed 1TB of storage.

There are other solutions to these problems that are freely available to the public provided that you host them your self. Among these the most popular and feature rich solution is Nextcloud. Nextcloud can be hosted by its inventors for a cost but comes with the same limitations listed above. Another option is to host it yourself. We understand that hosting your own applications is not why you got into business, so let us help you. Our flexible cost structure is designed to help you host you own documents in a secure environment that you control, while leaving you free to run your business without worrying about the technology behind it. We deliver complete data sovereignty, meaning that your data is never in a shared environment with other customers. Each customer is given a custom instance dedicated to their data. Your data is owned and controlled by you which means any law enforcement requests have to go to you instead of a faceless multi-billion dollar company.
